A proportional -
integral - derivative controller (PID controller or three-term controller) is a
control loop, feedback mechanism widely used in industrial control systems and
a variety of other applications requiring continuously modulated control. A PID
controller continuously calculates an error value {e(t)} as the difference
between a desired set- point (SP) and a measured process variable (PV) and
applies a correction based on proportional, integral, and derivative terms
(denoted P, I, and D respectively), hence the name. In theory, a controller can
be used to control any process which has a measurable output (PV), a known
ideal value for that output (SP) and an input to the process (MV) that will
affect the relevant PV. Controllers are used in industry to regulate
temperature, pressure, force, feed rate, flow rate, chemical composition
(component concentrations), weight, position, speed, and practically every
other variable for which a measurement exists.
